India is the second largest smartphone market in the world, and a lot of companies are trying to make a splash, well, Counterpoint Research’s new report sheds more light on the matter.
According to the source, Samsung is doing particularly well in India, and Xiaomi is leaving its mark in the country as well. Counterpoint Research actually released their findings on smartphone shipments in India, or as they call it “India smartphone shipments market share”.
If you take a look at a provided image down below, you’ll be able to see the aforementioned list of companies. As you can see, Samsung is on top, the company shipped quite a few smartphones in India in the first quarter of this year, and grabbed 26% of market share in that regard. Interestingly enough, Xiaomi is second-placed, as it seems like the company is doing really well in India, Xiaomi grabbed 13% of the market share.
Xiaomi is followed by Vivo (12%), OPPO (10%) and Lenovo (8%). Do keep in mind that Lenovo actually includes Motorola as well, so Moto devices are included in these calculations. Counterpoint Research says that the Indian smartphone market grew in Q1 this year, we’ve seen a growth of 15% in the smartphone segment (YoY).
It is worth mentioning that feature phones are still quite popular in India, which is quite interesting. Now, 4G LTE-capable phones contributed 96% of total smartphone shipments in India in Q1 this year, while Qualcomm-embedded smartphones grew 64% YoY (Year-on-Year). Eight out of ten smartphones that were shipped in India in Q1 2017 featured a 5-inch or bigger display, which is also a rather interesting fact.
Having that in mind, it will be interesting to see how will the aforementioned companies do later this year, will Xiaomi be able to maintain its second place, or will Vivo or OPPO push forward and throw Xiaomi to fourth place. Rumors are saying that Xiaomi has no plans to release the Xiaomi Mi 6 in India, though they seem to be planning another high-end phone for the Indian smartphone market.
